Office of Tenebrae - Holy Week 2015

Source: Immaculate Conception Church

Tenebrae is sung on each morning of the Sacred Triduum. This office of the Church is Matins followed by Lauds and is particular to these three days of Holy Week.

The praying of the Psalms is alternated with the singing of lessons and responsories, the subjects of which are the Passion and Death of Christ, the Lamentations of Jeremias and commentary on the Psalms. The schola and priests take part in singing them, with the faithful joining in the singing of the Psalms. The candles on the triangular candlestick are extinguished one at a time at the conclusion of each of the Psalms, and at the end, all the lights in the church are extinguished to signify the darkness that covered the world at the death of Christ.
